Ohio-born artist Jamaal Durr’s story is one of resilience, passion, and self-discovery amid life’s challenges.
Born in Lima, Ohio, and later moving to Dayton, Jamaal’s journey into the art world began from a place of personal and economic hardship.
“In 2016, everything that could go wrong had gone wrong,” recounts Jamaal.
He had just welcomed his second child into his family when he lost his job, car, and apartment. It was this challenging period that led him to deeply introspect and embrace art, a long-standing passion that life’s demands had sidelined.
Initially hesitant, Jamaal’s journey took a pivotal turn when he decided to pursue art seriously. His early work was marked by small illustrative pieces that were widely shared on social media.
“I wanted to see what would happen if I took art seriously,” he reflects. This decision, coupled with consistent effort to improve his technical skills, gradually opened doors to opportunities and recognition in the art community.
Sins in the Shadows
Jamaal’s ascent was not without self-doubt. “Every time a grant or residency landed, I felt disbelief and a touch of imposter syndrome,” he admits.
However, grantees have certainly shown their faith in his work. Bader + Simon, a new Cincinnati-based gallery, recently awarded Jamaal its Empowerment Grant, which supports emerging artists who align with the gallery’s mission of art, education, and social justice.
The award provides a cash grant of $ 7,500 disbursed over 8 months and a future exhibition at Bader + Simon’s gallery, scheduled to open in the Over-The-Rhine area of Cincinnati later this year.
Moments of recognition like this pushed Jamaal to embrace and lean into opportunities. His dedication to improving his craft led to increasing demand for his work, transitioning from modest $40−50 sales to larger commissions and exhibitions.
A monumental shift came in 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, when Jamaal decided to leave his day job at a hospital to focus solely on his art.
“I didn’t have a plan or savings. I just said, ‘I’m done.’ I’m going to focus on the art,” he recalls.
This leap of faith paid off as he continued to refine his art and entrepreneurial skills, balancing his dual roles as an artist and a father.
Jamaal’s work centers around deep introspection, exploring themes of identity, manhood, and fatherhood. He notes, “The better I understand myself, the better I can serve the world around me.”
Early in his career, his focus was on technical skill. Still, a transformative portfolio review pushed him to delve deeper into narrative-driven work, culminating in a powerful trilogy that confronts toxic masculinity and emotional suppression.
This series garnered significant attention, culminating in its purchase by the University of Dayton.
An advocate for social commentary through art, Jamaal created a striking piece titled “Heavenly Minded,” addressing issues of racial tensions and the misuse of religion.
Heavenly Minded
“When you weaponize religion, it can cause harm,” he asserts. This work reflects his commitment to addressing complex societal issues through a creative lens, encouraging dialogue and reflection.
“[Heavenly Minded] was born during a period of deeply divisive public dialogue, when harmful statements were excused through religion, and accountability was replaced with allegiance.
“What stayed with me was not just the rhetoric, but the way it fractured us internally. Watching members of my own community use faith to defend words and actions that dehumanize was devastating.”
His artistic pursuits are also interwoven with teaching and community engagement. Jamaal contributes to a teaching program for preschool children, imparting artistic skills and insights.
His aspirations include completing a new body of work and participating in prestigious art fairs such as the Atlanta Art Fair and, potentially, Scope in Miami during Art Basel.
A constant push towards growth and authenticity marks Jamaal’s journey. He emphasizes, “In the past few years, I’ve kept on the path of introspection, but now my head is up, and I see more around me that I want to comment on.”
His humble beginnings and perseverance have not only shaped him into a thriving artist but also an influential voice for change and creativity within and beyond his community.
Through his art, Jamaal continues to navigate and interrogate both personal and universal experiences, creating a space where introspection meets broader societal narratives, all while forging a path that inspires others to pursue their passions against all odds.
