For the last two-plus years, Photojournalist Nick Childers has been covering the war in Ukraine from the frontlines of a deadly and destructive struggle against Russian invaders.

The fighting has been brutal for both sides, with Russian forces reportedly suffering hundreds of thousands of deaths and injuries, while Ukraine’s losses measure in the tens of thousands.

Childers has produced some memorable work from Ukraine for Postindustrial, like this photo essay from the outset of the war in 2022, as well as others including Al-Jazeera.

He recently spoke to Postindustrial from an undisclosed location on the eastern front about what the fighting is like, the morale of the soldiers, and more.
