“The Art of Democracy” exhibition series addresses some of the most important issues in America today: women’s reproductive rights, guns, and whether Our Republic “shall not perish from this earth.”
Two of our great passions at Postindustrial – politics and art – are part of a new show in Western Pennsylvania that showcases artists whose work explores topics we’ll ponder on the way to the polling station.
The current exhibit runs through Nov. 2 at the Brew House Arts space in Pittsburgh, where topics like reproductive rights, gun violence, and other injustices are confronted head-on.
The series, which also included two smaller shows at California University of Pennsylvania and Indiana University of Pennsylvania was expertly produced by Keystone Progress Education Fund and Casey Droege Cultural Productions, and curated by Natalie Sweet, Michaela Blanc, and Jillian Daniels.
“A healthy democracy relies on the engagement of its people, not just to vote, but to speak boldly and defend free expression, protect each other and the land, and work collaboratively towards a common good,” said Sweet, the executive director at Brew House.
“ I think it's easy for people to feel overwhelmed by the topic of democracy right now, myself included, which is why it was important to me to highlight a feeling of optimism around the possibility that things can be different.
“I wanted to give visitors space to both reflect on critical issues and also, hopefully, to feel inspired by the creative ways that artists and community members are working together.”
We love that this show focuses on many of the topics we cover at Postindustrial and congratulate all the artists, curators, and producers on a stellar collection that speaks to the challenges of our times and highlights those who speak out against tyranny and repression.
