In the heart of the Ohio city, a vibrant new arts community is taking shape, driven by the passion and vision of Stephanie Serna, a musician and artist who has made it her mission to create a hub of expression and collaboration.
Museville, nestled in a repurposed warehouse, is set to become a beacon for artists and creatives from across the Midwest and beyond.
Serna, who decades ago moved from Long Beach to Akron, found herself drawn to the area by the promise of affordable living and a welcoming arts community. “
I started feeling like I was rich because I could afford things,” Serna shared, reflecting on the stark contrast between living in Southern California and the more accessible Midwest.
Her move was catalyzed by a friend who insisted there was something special waiting for her in Akron. Indeed, Serna discovered a community ripe with opportunity and camaraderie, reminiscent of her roots in Long Beach.
Now, Museville aims to be more than just an art space; it’s a vision of community engagement and artistic exploration.
The facility will host a gallery, workshops, open studios, and music events, offering a platform for artists to teach, create, and collaborate.
“We want to have an open studio where people can drop in and just create art,” explained Serna, emphasizing the importance of accessibility and community involvement.
The project is supported in part by an inheritance from a neighbor Serna cared for, who left her funds with the encouragement, “You’ll figure it out.”
This financial boost has been pivotal in bringing Museville to life, along with the backing of Serna’s partner, who shares her vision of fostering an inclusive and dynamic arts environment.
Museville’s physical space is as eclectic as its mission. A 1964 Shasta trailer, affectionately named Dorothy, resides inside the warehouse, serving as a whimsical nod to the creative spirit of the space. The walls are adorned with murals, including a vibrant Wizard of Oz-themed piece, transforming the warehouse into a colorful sanctuary.
The organization also plans to host music events, with a stage and sound system ready for performances.
Serna herself is deeply embedded in the music scene, having played in various bands and embraced a wide range of musical styles. Her current band, One Fine Day, features a lineup inspired by girl groups from past decades, highlighting her diverse musical influences.
As Museville prepares for its official launch, the excitement is palpable. A recent open house provided a sneak peek into the vibrant community brewing within its walls.
