Chaos erupted in Traverse City, Michigan, over the weekend when a 42-year-old man went on a stabbing spree, wounding 11 people.
Witnesses described scenes of panic and horror as customers rushed out of the store. One bystander said he saw the attacker slash a woman’s throat near the checkout counter.
Since then, authorities say the rampage appeared to be a series of random acts. “Based on the information that we have at this time, they were random,” said Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea.
The suspect was subdued within minutes by shoppers, one of whom was armed and repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife.
Initially, six victims were in critical condition and five in serious condition, but Munson Healthcare said seven of the injured victims were now in fair condition.
The FBI and Michigan State Police are assisting with the investigation. No motive has been released.
Located on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Traverse City is a scenic and peaceful town of approximately 15,000, renowned for its tourism and the annual National Cherry Festival.
