Postindustrial America has endured its share of hardships in recent years. The loss of steel, manufacturing and coal jobs left many without income, identity or hope.

Others, however, are thriving.

Many people have found ways to reinvent themselves amid a changing economic and social landscape. There are new industries to replace the old. Artists from the region have a global audience and numerous cities are experiencing a renaissance of sorts. In May of 2021, two friends set out to explore one of America’s most important regions, and its people as mask mandates lifted.
