Mapping the Chicago Neighborhoods Most at Risk From Pollution

A new Chicago map, created by the Natural Resources Defense Council, shows how pollution and environmental degradation is spread and experienced unequally throughout the city. The map combines environmental and socio-demographic characteristics of all Chicago neighborhoods and considers factors “such as cancer and respiratory risks from air toxins, lead paint exposure, and proximity to Superfund sites; on the socio-demographic side, it incorporates poverty, minorities, linguistic isolation, and the percentage of young and old people.” The map will serve as a valuable tool for Chicago residents who have been arguing the case for their disproportionate environmental harm, but been ignored by the city’s government.
