An Epidemic of Untapped Potential

Over the past year, the Boston Globe has investigated the lives of 93 of the 113 valedictorians who were featured in the paper’s 2005 to 2007 ‘Faces of Excellence’ reports. As they tried to identify how Boston’s best and brightest had fared, they learned that many struggled after high school graduation: a quarter failed to earn a bachelor’s degree within six years, another quarter aspired to be doctors, but none received a medical degree, four have been homeless, and 40% currently earn less than $50,000. The first article in this five-part series is focused on Michael Blackwood, a black valedictorian who received a full scholarship to Boston College and seemed to have defeated the odds, but never fulfilled his life dream of becoming a doctor.
